The Bankroll Building Project (Guide to Micro-Limit SNGs)
by Chris "Fox" Wallace

Guide #1 Micro-Limit SNGs
posted by fox on October 15, 2007 @ 2:45 am
I just read that a solid SNG player and fellow poker coach Jennifear claims 6,000 SNG's at the $5 level with an ROI of 51%. While I would need a ton of SNG's to match the skill she has worked so hard to acquire, it tells me that the 47% ROI that I have now might not be impossible to maintain. Obviously you need to be a very good player to get your ROI above a certain level, but if 50% is possible then a typical solid player, following my guide, should be able to crank out 10% or even 15% without too much work.

I have also invited Jennifear to come teach for us at pokerfox.net and make some videos, but she claims to lack the skills necessary. Anyone with an ROI over 50% in SNG's is ready to start teaching in my opinion, so maybe I can sway her. Jennifear! Come join us!

I haven't had any time to play this last few days, but I hope to play some $10 SNG's starting tomorrow. I should have numbers on those within a few days, and I'll be looking at $25 no-limit games as soon as my bankroll hits $500. At some point SNG's won't be the most profitable thing to do, but I'm not sure where that level will be.

A Great Early Morning Session

I couldn't sleep this morning, so I played a set of SNG's, and wouldn't you know it, I cashed in four out of the five that I played, for a $27 profit. ROI is back up to 47% in the $5 and $6 tournaments. Current bankroll is almost $270, and I'm getting ready to move up to the $10 tourneys and see if the competition is any tougher. Click the thumbnail below for my spreadsheet that has all my SNG results from the project so far.

A Small Correction

My win rate sowed down a little bit this last 24 hours when I played 9 SNG's and lost $2 over the session. That leaves me with an ROI at the $5 level of 35% which is still quite good, maybe even too good to maintain over the long run. I strongly believe that 25% is achievable, which gives me some interesting numbers. Playing 4 tables of $5.50 buy-in, 9 handed SNG's at an ROI of 25% yields the following numbers.

$1.37 per SNG

$0.15 per SNG in rakeback, Full Tilt points, etc.

7 SNG's per hour.

$10.64 per hour in net profit.

Starting with $150, a solid player could be up to $400 in just 25 hours of play. At that point they are ready to take on the $10 SNG's. Hopefully I can put the hours in soon, current bankroll is around $240, because I have had so little time to play.

SNG's are the way!

I don't know why the pool of fish seems so much better at the sit and go tables, possibly because people get tired of grinding them and switch to cash games, meaning there are more inexperienced players. Regardless of why it is, I think I have found a temporary home at these games. I know the SNG's get tougher, but for the micro-limits they seem to be the easiest money. Part of what I wanted to do when I started this project was not only to build a bankroll and blog about it, but to write guides along the way, like signposts pointing towards a bankroll.

The first guide will be on beating the $5 SNG's and how to make the most money from these games. It may be a few days, but it will be ready soon. I will also have another SNG video as well as a no-limit cash game video on the site within the next day or two.

Current results for SNG's after playing seven more today -

I'm up $73 after playing 24 sit and go's, running at a 52% ROI. That may not be maintainable, but these games are easily beatable for half that and maybe close to the 50% ROI number. We'll see soon as my sample size gets larger. Current bankroll is $240, and I have $13 in rakeback earned as well. I am not counting Full Tilt points since I am occasionally playing other games on this account and I had a random odd number to begin with.

More SNG's

I played another seven sit and go's tonight, and the play was as weak as ever. After trying a few 6max tables and turbo's versus non-turbos over the last few days I think I have enough information about my opponents to start writing the guide to beating them. The play is certainly weak enough to make good money playing them.

Tonight's Results -

Buy-in Cash Out

$5.50 $0

$5.50 $0

$6.50 $0

$6.50 $12.60

$5.50 $10.50

$6.50 $22.50

$6.50 $0

-------------------------

$42.50 $45.60

Total profit a measly $3.10, but it was a good learning experience and generated some rakeback too. Not bad for an hours work on such a short bankroll, though it's nothing like last night's awesome results.
